Ask the characters in your next story the following questions and see what they say:
1. Who are you?
2. What do you want?
I like doing it, because somehow my characters seem to respond well to these questions. Sometimes they seem to be hiding things, though, so we get to move on to a third question:
3. Come on, what do you really want?
