This is a thread for anyone to post their first sentences from their novels in January and beyond that in 2013.
Here is my first sentence...
Julia knew she will never make it out alive from the Asylum, she never counted on help from her friend who visits her to get her out of there.

I don't yet know what the first sentence of January will be, because I don't yet know what I will write in January. It is a delightfully freeing experience. Maybe I will wait until 12:00 A.M. January 1st to decide, for once. (If I don't Just mauled by plot bunnies by then, and if I can contain my impatience to make a decision.)
As for the first sentence of Dark Arcana, I have to say… I have forgotten. #Badwritet
It probably involves a homeless woman running through the city streets at night, though.

He was gagged and tied to a chair. Again.I know - two sentences. They go together too well to separate, though (which probably means they should be one sentence ). Anyway, that's the first line of Tainted, also known as "Frost, I warned you about wanting to be the MC of a Siana Blackwood story".

Bonus points for leaving him alone in the room with a bowl of petunias.
I like it better as two. It has a better effect. I mean, technically, the meaning does not change, but the delivery is better with two sentences, I think.
Edit: redundant statements are redundant.

I've still got a long way to go on my current novel but am thinking I might start the sequel in January, since the first third or so will have to be one big long Meanwhile, Thousands Of Miles Away. So here's the start of that.
Halfway down an especially bland Omaha side street, a University of Nebraska junior was lying on the sidewalk considering world domination.

There were locks everywhere.
That's the only first sentence I have. Unless you count Deus Ex Machina, which I haven't started. Well, here's the first sentence from the unmentionably bad first draft which I wrote years and years ago.
Ghosts! Ghosts! Ghosts!
I can't believe I still remember.
