We all have one - a story that's hung over our heads incomplete for so long that it takes on monster-like proportions. Sometimes writers go to extraordinary lengths to avoid their WIP-from-Hell and other times they chip away at it piece by piece for years on end but never feel like they're getting anywhere. Well, here's a challenge designed to put an end to all that.
The challenge:
1) Identify your WIP-from-Hell
2) Take a long, hard look at it (preferably with a motivational weapon in hand to stop the story and/or main character from leaping up and doing you an injury )
3) Define 'finished'. Do you still need to reach the end of the first draft? Have you been avoiding a plunge into 'editing-and-rewriting' territory? Your definition of 'finished' can be anywhere from 'a complete first draft' to 'ready to query'. What milestone do you need to reach with this story in 2013?
4) Now comes something difficult: put some numbers on your current definition of 'finished'. Exactly when are you going to finish that first draft? How long will it be? Name a date when you're going to reach the milestone you set yourself as the target in part 3.
5) Finally, the most difficult part - a public announcement. Post the following information in this thread:
Name of novel/project:
Current definition of 'finished':
Procedure for reaching 'finished':
Deadline:
You can post separate deadlines for each step of your procedure or just a single date for when you reach the elusive goal of 'finished'. Good luck!
Further information:
This thread isn't just for posting your public announcement of your intention to defeat your WIP-from-Hell. You can also post progress updates, words of encouragement and/or advice to your fellow participants. Just keep the discussion WIP-from-Hell related - there are other places for chatting about different writing challenges.
