I have no idea what to actually say about this, but I figured we deserved an 'end of the world' thread. Should I switch the counter from NaNo 2013 to December 21st 2012?
Wait, I have a question. The 'end of the world' is marked by the solstice, but exactly what part of the solstice? Sunrise? Midday? Sunrise or midday as observed from one particular Mayan temple? If that last one is the case, will those of us who live in earlier timezones actually have to wait until some time on the 22nd for the apocalypse? Right now in South America it ranges from 10:30am to 1:30pm on Sunday, while my own clock says 2:30am on Monday.
My favourite scenario is an apocalypse that takes 24 hours, wiping out each timezone as the sun hits its zenith.
Anyway, the end of the world approaches, however it's supposed to work. The Prime Minister says she'll protect us from zombies and monsters, NASA says there are no asteroids or planets heading our way and I cut my research short in fear of plot bunnies, which brings me around to the subject of writing. I think I fancy the idea of marking the occasion with a wriday. Asimov Day, perhaps?
(In honour of his famous quote: "If my doctor told me I had only six minutes to live, I wouldn't brood. I'd type a little faster.")

Asimov Day. That settles it. We need this.
As for the Mayans, they never figured in leap days, so according to that calendar, it's already 2013...which sort of reduces the solstice thing to quibbling.
As for the 24-hour apocalypse, that would make for an interesting story. Oooh! Oooh! Role play thread!
...This whole end of the world thing reminds me of Asimov's story, Nightfall. (Both the short story and the Silverberg/Asimov novel.)
Also, I firmly believe that should the Prime Minister or NASA fail, U.N.I.T and the Doctor will prevail.

Just to be That Guy, the solstice does happen at an actual time, not just a day. This year it's at 11:12 AM GMT on the 21st.
A 24-hour apocalypse is a great idea for a story, though. Back in May of last year I had sort of a half-baked idea for a short story based on what it would be like if Harold Camping's apocalypse had actually happened, but then finals week.

According to that guy from NASA, the Mayan calendar is entirely based around the solar year, so leap years etc. don't make any difference. Also, averting the apocalypse should be the subject of a thing that can only happen in fanfiction: a massively paradox-infested meeting of all the Doctors. The end of the world doesn't stand a chance .

Maybe all the Doctors meet to prevent the Apocalypse, but the paradox ends up causing it, so the only way to save the world is to not save the world, thereby destroying the world, so they all decide to help save it, and

Can anyone see that picture of all the doctors or has it really disappeared? I'm never sure if it's my dodgy internet connection or a real problem.
(It could also be that even putting all of them together in a single graphic is too much of a paradox when we're this close to the end of the world.)

Nope, it's disappeared. It never showed up for me.
(Okay, this is driving me CRAZY, so I apologize in advance. It's Asimov with an s, not a z.)

Oops. Corrections duly applied.
Note to self: never try to spell names from memory. You hate it when people spell your name wrong.
